1901 Census

Age 8,  at school, living with widowed mother Mary, a grocer and shopkeeper, his brothers and two boarders in Back Lane, Radcliffe on Trent. His father William died 1898, age 62. His brother William, age 15, was a fishmonger’s assistant  and  brother John, age 11, was presumably at school. Boarders Walter Kirk, 23, and Robert Knight, 19, were plumbers. The grocer’s shop was on the corner of Water Lane and Bailey Lane.

1911 Census

Age 18, was working as a horseman on a farm and living with his widowed mother Mary, age 62, a grocer, brother William, age 25, domestic gardener and brother John, 21, a painter and paper hanger. They lived in Back Lane in a house with five rooms.

No attestation record and no detailed military service information found. The 2/8th Battalion were in Ireland (involved in suppression of Easter Rising, 1916 in Dublin where they took some casualties) before transferring to the Western Front.
